As an educator of musicians, Julie’s work spans the range from beginning children and adults, to aspiring and experienced professionals. She works with both individuals and groups and is always excited to learn about new converts to the world of early music. Having trained primarily in Europe, Julie brings that knowledge and approach to Americans without having to move abroad themselves.
Her approach is one that focuses on inspiring and supporting a student’s own interest. While she has a large “toolbox” of knowledge, skills and techniques which she happily shares, Julie believes that every player learns most when they’re motivated by their own interests, desires and tastes. Her emphasis is on bringing out the authentic voice of each player.
Currently, Julie teaches viola da gamba at Macalester and St. Olaf colleges as well as at the St. Paul Conservatory of Music. She is Music Director of the national conclave of the Viola da gamba Society of America and is frequently on the faculties of the Whitewater Early Music Workshop and Viol Sphere 2 in Tucson, AZ.
A few years ago she formed the Twin Cities Early Music Collective which provides amateur musicians the opportunity to play music for larger groups. By making a short term commitment (usually 6 weeks) students have the opportunity to work under Julie’s leadership, play a wide range of Renaissance and Baroque works, experience a public performance and make new friends to boot.
Her work with children led her to develop the Passamezzo Method for viola da gamba. Click the button below for more information about this unique method.
