Julie Elhard has specialized in viola da gamba since 1987 when she moved to the Netherlands to pursue her interest in early music. Her experience there fueled her burning desire to make music a transformative experience, both for the performer and the listener. Ms Elhard received a Performing Artist Certificate from the Royal Conservatory of Music, The Hague in 1991, and has performed in both Europe and the United States, including the Matthew Passion arias and the solo sonatas by J.S. Bach.

Ms. Elhard is sought after as a soloist and has appeared with such renowned ensembles as The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Apollo’s Fire, The Lyra Baroque Orchestra, and the Bach Society of Minnesota. As a chamber musician, Ms. Elhard has toured with Cecilia’s Circle , Violes Egales and Trio Atlantica, and is a founding member of Glorious Revolution Baroque – bringing Baroque music back to its revolutionary roots.

Ms. Elhard seeks to infuse the musical essence presented by the composer into her part. Playing her role effectively requires a subtle and unspoken communication with the other musicians, where the sum of the whole becomes greater than the sum of the parts. Creating a new musical experience every time is her goal.
